What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine addresses the underlying cause of disease. By shifting the traditional symptom-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, their diet and lifestyle, not just an isolated set of symptoms. We ask ~ 'What is causing these symptoms', we do not say 'Let's cover up these symptoms.'
Functional medicine practitioners review a patient's comprehensive health history and look at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease.
What conditions do we treat with functional medicine?
Many diseases including cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's, digestive problems, hormone imbalances, autoimmune diseases (Celiac's, arthritis, psoriasis, thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis), weight issues, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other chronic degenerative diseases are linked to inflammation in the body. In fact, chronic inflammation is a dangerous immunological reaction that can damage healthy cells and has been called the "Secret Killer" of the 21st century. Addressing what is causing inflammation is the first step towards health for many patients. For further information on what we treat read Inflammation and Functional Medicine or fill out our inflammation Checklist to assess your risk factors.
